The former Brookwood Village was a beloved part of the Birmingham community. Many memories were created there during the decades in which it operated. The interior of the mall and Macy's are currently closed, and the doors are locked. Now it is time to determine how best to honor the spirit and presence of Brookwood Village. The team who will shepherd the property into its next life includes Fairway Investments and Colliers | Alabama, both of Birmingham, and Pope & Land of Atlanta. This team is working hard to re-envision the property while continuing to consult with the three municipalities involved – Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Jefferson County. We will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
Brookwood Village sits on 57 acres in the middle of Shades Mountain and Shades Creek and is surrounded by three of Alabama’s top ranked cities: Homewood, Mountain Brook, and Vestavia Hills. It also sits between Highway 280 and Highway 31, making it easily accessible and convenient to everyone in the Birmingham metropolitan area. This site can truly serve as a hub for the neighborhoods and communities that it connects within Jefferson County.
After its completion in 1973, Brookwood Village was known throughout the Birmingham area as a vibrant enclosed shopping destination featuring the best names in retail — but on a personal level, it has always been much more than just a mall. From meals in the food court with friends to starry-eyed kids sitting on Santa’s knee, Brookwood Village is a place where memories have been made for decades.
The arrival of COVID-19 escalated the decline that had already begun at Brookwood Village several years ago. Shop after shop closed its doors and vacancy rates jumped substantially, causing the near total loss of a treasured destination for multiple communities in the area. But with the right vision and a thoughtful plan, Brookwood Village can be restored to its former glory and take back its rightful place as a beloved gathering spot for friends, family, and more.
